Jamba Juice Is A Sugar-fest, States Mother Jones

Getting Jamba Juice doesn’t seem quite as appealing after a Feb. 28 Mother Jones article on the fast-food smoothie business. Specifically, light Jamba Juice smoothies are walking Splenda factories, writes Ashley Bates. Not only are they artificial, however the calorie load seems inconsistent with notions of good health.

First McDonald’s oatmeal, now Jamba Juice smoothies

Nutrition has been looked at more closely recently with food. After the McDonald’s oatmeal was torn apart for nutrition, many started to question Jamba Juice smoothies. Juice, ice and skim milk aren’t used to create Jamba Juice smoothies. This is the problem, Bates explains. The high speed service is what Jamba Juice is planning to get with the “simple, honest ingredients” in the smoothies. Actual milk and fruit do not go together in smoothies since they “don’t taste good together,” according to Jamba Juice store general manager Jillian Shamoon. The classic smoothies instead are made with frozen yogurt and sherbet ice cream. A “dairy base” with Splenda in it is used if a customer asks for a “light” smoothie.

Crazy level of calories found

About 400 calories are found in a medium sized Jamba Juice smoothie typically, states Bates, for instance the Mango-a-go-go Classic. The range from 250 to 600 calories is where the majority of the Jamba Juice smoothies lie. You will find 540 calories in a McDonald’s Big Mac. It’s fast food being eaten while at Jamba Juice when considering this. Even though a smoothie is typically a better choice than a Big Mac, most people treat them as snacks leading to more calories in the end, says Dr. Alison Field of Harvard Medical School.

No comment from Jamba Juice websites

Whether or not Jamba Juice smoothies are meals is something the company itself hasn’t commented on. You will find plenty of issues with Splenda by itself though. This is something everyone who is concerned about health already knows. Fields pointed to numerous studies that show people who consume diet sodas with Splenda tend to gain weight anyway. Dr. Janet Hull, “Splenda Exposed” writer, states there is even more. Splenda certainly needs more testing, Hull admits. It is currently believed that it can cause sleep disruption, cancer, Lupus, diabetes, MS, sexual dysfunction and others.
