The Evolution Of The T-Mobile G Series Phone
As the Android Wars heat up and manufacturers battle for their own piece of the smart phone pie, a flurry of new models are hitting the market at a rapid pace. It’s been interesting to watch the evolution of the Android platform, as well as the rapid progression of the hardware running it. The latest must-have handset in the Android world is the G2 from T-Mobile, a re-imagining of the original G1 that started it all. How good is the G2? We won’t know until the end of September, but by the look of things the G2 could be another hit.
Let’s take a quick gander at the stats across the board to see how the G2 stacks up against it’s predecessor, as well as the other new kid on the block, the myTouch Slide. The G1 runs on a now-outdated 528 MHz ARM11 CPU with a paltry 192 MB of RAM. The myTouch Slide features a 600 MHz Qualcomm ARM11 with 512 MB of RAM. It’s a significant boost in power over the old G1, but still pales in comparison to the G2. The G2 will boast a meaty 800 MHz ARM processor supported by 512 MB of RAM.
The Android OS runs on all three models in different variations. The G1 was the first model to feature Google’s mobile platform, and it performed admirably from its introduction. But it’s showing its age, as newer models like the G2 and the myTouch Slide come with more recent versions of Android right out of the gate. The myTouch Slide originally featured Android 2.1, but can now be upgraded to v2.2 via an OTA update. The G2 comes with Froyo by default. It goes without saying that v2.2 is the one you want to fully take advantage of the latest hardware for optimal performance.
Until we get some user reviews and feedback from G2 customers, we can only guess what the real speed and power of the G2 feels like. But on paper, it looks like a winner. Backed by T-Mobile’s highly capable 4G HSPA+ network, it should provide a slick Internet experience and impressive download speeds. T-Mobile’s network, highly underrated, is only getting better at this point. Couple that with award-winning customer service and support, and the G2 ought to enjoy a smooth ride in terms of owner satisfaction and performance. It looks like it’ll sell for the now standard $199 with a contract or for $500 without.
Choosing the right Android phone out of the many contenders is basically a crap-shoot at this point. The G2 is rising to the cream of the top as the best option. They didn’t change anything that made the G1 so successful, opting instead for incremental improvements for a fast and stable device. To take proper care of the G2, you’ll want to spring for one of the T-Mobile G2 Screen Protectors available through T-Mobile or one of the many third-party providers. There will no doubt be plenty of exciting T-Mobile G2 Accessories and T-Mobile G2 Cases coming soon to complement the phone and extend its functionality. Stay tuned, because the T-Mobile G2 could get very interesting.
