Is the military-industrial complex the most dangerous threat we will face?
President Dwight D. Eisenhower said the military-industrial complex was a very dangerous threat to America. Michael Moore, who I typically disagree with, even made a valid point in his movie, Bowling for Columbine.
In Bowling for Columbine, Moore said that the government is not helping the problem as they denounce violence, but use it all the time. It is a fact that on the day that the Columbine Massacre occurred, the US and NATO dropped more bombs on Kosovo than any other day. Most of the people living in the Columbine area were working at Lockheed Martin, a military contractor.
Americans are surrounded by guns and violence in the media and in real life all the time. Politicians have done a good job in using their scare tactics against Americans.
Yes, the defense contractors have become institutionalized, and their sole purpose is to draw the U.S. into war (or keep us involved in the wars we already have). They wield their influence through the Pentagon and CIA, who typically encourage violent response to any global crisis, and the entire bunch are heavily invested in selling arms to us AND our enemies. Stricter oversight and regulation of their activities is needed, especially as it pertains to conflicts-of-interest, and the right-wing extremists should be purged from the government and barred from working as private defense subcontractors. Enough is enough!
