How do I get my horse to get over windy days?
When ever a storm rolls in and there’s a bunch of wind, he just flips out. He’s constantly trotting and cantering around, spooking at everything (the fence, the gate, the goats, ect ,ect) You’d think someone was out there casing him with a whip and smaking him every chance they got (which never happends anymore). I can’t make the weather stay windy ever day until he gets over it, so anyway to help with his wind fear?
This is a normal reaction for a horse, even one who is very well trained and usually calm. Horses are very dependent upon their senses and their extreme sensitivity for survival. Regardless of the fact that we have domesticated them, they remain inherently, a prey animal. A lot of wind greatly interferes with the horse’s ability to hear normally, there is a lot of abnormal noise and movement around with the wind, so he is basically afraid something is going to kill and eat him so he reacts this way. It is a legitimate fear response for the horse. It is just too much input for him to handle. We have had really unusually windy days during February and March this year and my farm has a lot of trees. The horses are very wary so on these days, I do not ask them to do things they are not capable of doing within their comfort level and safety level for me and them. My horses are very advanced in their training, but I never forget they are horses and I respect them and their perceptions. For them, they are always right. On those terribly windy days, just give your horse a break and a day off. It is best for everyone. To attempt to work in the round pen (unless it is inside) or under saddle outside is really unsafe and unfair to the horse. First and foremost, help your horse and be safe.
