Four Loko And Comparable Beverages Are Unsafe Based On FDA
Public outrage has led federal regulators, such as the Food and Drug Administration, to label Four Loko and comparable drinks as unsafe. The makers of Four Loko, and other manufacturers of comparable drinks, were warned to change the product. There’s no official ban, however it amounts to one. An investigation into caffeine laced alcoholic drinks has been ongoing for over a year.
Already investigating Four Loko
Caffeinated alcoholic drinks, such as Four Loko, have been under federal investigation since November of 2009, as outlined by the Washington Post. The investigation of products from at least 30 companies was spurred by requests for investigation from several state attorneys general. However, a string of recent incidents caused federal officials to do something. Letters were issued by the Food and Drug Administration to four companies that make seven similar products — including Phusion Projects Inc., which makes Four Loko — that mixing caffeine and alcohol is not approved by the FDA and had been classified as unsafe. Fifteen days were given to the companies to remove the caffeine from their products. The FDA said legal action would happen if they didn’t abide by this.
Company has to change ways because of incidents
A couple of months ago, various students from Central Washington University were admitted to a hospital after consuming Four Loko along with other drinks, and Four Loko was subsequently banned in Washington state, effective Friday. Other incidents included Four Loko too. This is what the newest York Times reports. One night a 20-year-old in Tennessee shot himself committing suicide after drinking Four Loko while an 18-year old drank Four Loko with some diet pills and then died in Florida. Though it isn’t known whether Four Loko or similar beverages are clear culprits in any of these incidents, or were complicating factors, calls for having Four Loko banned are increasing. Phusion announced recently that it will discontinue the addition of caffeine to its drinks.
Beginning the bans
Four Loko and similar products were banned by Michigan and Washington state already while New York state is almost there since it is obviously not safe to mix caffeine and alcohol.
