Jim Nantz offended by Tiger Woods swearing on Masters telecast
Jim Nantz was offended by Tiger Woods’ swearing on live TV after the beleaguered recovering sex addict shanked some shots during last weekend’s Masters telecast. Nantz, who called the tournament for CBS, clearly conveyed his outrage on the air during a New York sports radio talk show on Monday.
During Tiger Woods swearing, Jim Nantz announces
Jim Nantz, a veteran announcer who has called Super Bowls, Final Fours and numerous Masters, publicly scolded Tiger Woods swearing during Saturday’s third-round Masters telecast. Woods shouted, “Tiger Woods, you suck,” following a lousy tee shot on the par-3 6th hole. The shot didn’t bite, rolling about 70 feet away from the pin. Pushing it almost 20 feet past the hole and ending up with a bogey four, Woods clearly botched his next shot, a birdie putt. Vern Lundquist, Nantz’s broadcasting partner on the Masters telecast, said, “I don’t think he’s pleased,” which may very well qualify for the biggest understatement uttered this year by a sportscaster on the air.
On the air is where Jim Nantz vents
Likely in disgust, Jim Nantz watched at Woods went on on a later play and uttered something many would probably say broke the third commandment. No big deal? Well, it certainly was to Jim Nantz, who, if you can remember, said on WFAN’s Mike Francesa Show “If I would have said that on the air, I would have been fired.” Nantz said that in the past, Tiger Woods swearing wasn’t a huge bother, but the fact that Tiger has promised to change after committing a series of adultery made things different for this year’s Masters telecast.
Tiger Woods swearing didn’t end there
With Jim Nantz announcing, moving on to the next hole Tiger Wood cursing filled the airwaves again after he shanked an approach on his way to another bogey!. A number of hacks like this would have most golfers dishing out fast cash to their hombres. But in a public apology for his prolific philandering in February, Tiger Woods promised to show more respect to his fellow pros and their fans. At the 2010 Masters, he managed to stay quiet for about 42 holes before the game got the better of him. Hoping for victory, Woods finished in fourth place, which indeed diminished his pay day. Walking away with $ 1.35 million was winner Phil Mickelson. Woods was given $ 333,000, which is really nothing to him.
Jim Nantz and Tiger Woods have something in common
Although Jim Nantz may be upset over Tiger’s poor choice of words, the CBS announcer shares a modicum of kinship with Woods in other matters. He doesn’t make as much as Tiger, but he takes home about $ 7 million each year and will not be needing a pay day loan anytime soon. Last fall during legal proceedings to divorce his wife of 26 years, the 50-year-old announcer fessed up that he had been fooling around with a 29-year-old girlfriend he met promoting his book, “Always by my Side.”
Was Tiger Woods swearing in French?
Some people question the wisdom of using live microphones on Masters telecast. Hyper-competitive feins are going after the big dollars playing a game that often drives the normal person crazy. Perhaps the reaction to Tiger Woods swearing on the Masters telecast will inspire pro athletes to follow the lesson of Los Angeles Lakers forward Kobe Bryant, who cursed refs in Serbian a few years ago. Bryant told the media that he learned how to cuss in languages of his teammates, Vladimir Radmanovic (Serbia), Sasha Vujacic (Slovenia) and Ronny Turiaf (France). “I’ve been cursing in French. French is really cool, because everything sounds good in French.”
