brides….do you share my feelings?
I have gotten a giant cut crystal punch bowl, 3 personalized silver frames, and a set of pink towels and sheets with a gallon of sage green paint to go with them for the bedroom. None of it is our style and clashes so badly with our home all I can really do is store them in the garage.
I am very greatful for these gifts since they came from the hearts of my family and friends and love them for the thought behind them. On the other hand, nothing close to any of this stuff was on the registry…especially not pink linens since both fiancee and I HATE pink. I would never dream of being so rude as to demand they give me receipts but I can’t help but feel a little frustrated especailly when people come over and complain that their pink sheets and gilt picture frames aren’t on display. I don’t want to sound like their gifts were unappreciated…but I also dont want a pink and green bedroom.
Send them thank you notes. Anything you can figure out on your own where it came from, go ahead and exchange for something you’d like better. Anything you can’t exchange, stick it in the garage and forget about it.
I was given a set of everyday china that I really couldn’t use at my wedding shower. The giver was really sweet. She thought since the only china I’d registered for was formal that I must have forgotten about what we were going to eat off of every day. The fact was I actually had a full set of very nice day-to-day china. The box o’ china I was given wasn’t my style and wasn’t something I could use…but I turned it into a set of sheets we love and use to this day and a cute purple soapdish. I never told the giver.
Unless the givers are people who are going to be hunting in your home for their gifts, just thank them and don’t worry about it. If someone asks about their picture frame, you can always tell them you’re waiting until you have juuuust the right picture…and then never happen to find the right one.
If the giver of the pink bedroom comes looking for it, tell them you’re not breaking out the sheets and towels until you’ve done the painting. Then just don’t quite get around to it.
It’s frustrating, but it helps to be able to laugh quietly to yourself about it and with affection for the folks responsible.
