Inferno Bowling
In Dante’s Inferno, in the ninth circle of Treachery, why are the faces of the traitors positioned -?

differently in Caina, Antenora, and Ptolomaea – as well as being totally covered in ice in Judecca.

In Caina I believe they look down, in Antenora they look straight ahead, and in Ptolomaea they are upturned with bowls of ice forming in there eyes.

What is the significance of the different postures? I have three books with detailed analysis of the Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso, but it doesn’t seem to outline why Dante was explicit in the different positioning of the traitors in each round if the ninth circle.

Round 1: Caina: Treachery against kindred.
Round 2: Antenora: Treachery against country or party.
Round 3: Ptolmea: Treachery against guests or friends.
Round 4: Judecca: Treachery against lords and benefactors.

If you can come up with your own theory about this, you can probably publish a monograph about it. maybe even get yourself a holiday job in Florence (this is how Doctor Fell gets his library appointment in Hannibal).

I hadn’t noticed this feature of the infernal geography before – but Dante’s imagination is intensely visual: he won’t have done it inadvertently.
