I am thinking of getting my first handgun for self defense. Any suggestions for a small handed female?
I live in Vermont so none of the “gun laws” apply.
I bought my wife a S&W model 2213 .22 caliber semi-automatic, she loves it! She also has small hands and this particular model fits her perfectly, plus the slide is easy for her to manipulate. Unfortunately S&W doesn’t make that model anymore but you can find them used for around $200-$250.
If you don’t have a lot of experience with handguns I would recommend a .38 calibre revolver like a S&W LadySmith. Revolvers are much more user-friendly than their semi-automatic counterparts, especially if you are just starting out.
I would also recommend taking a course on firearm safety and spending a lot of time at the range getting familiar with how your handgun handles, once you choose one that is.
Being familiar with your handgun and how it points and shoots could be the differance between life and death when/if the time comes that you ever have to defend yourself. My aunt was killed with her own handgun because she failed to become familiar with it, she assumed that just having one would be good enough. The guy who broke in called her bluff when she pulled it on him, he took it from her, raped her, then shot/killed her. This happened in 1991 and the case is still open because he has never been caught. If she had spent some time at the range and taken a few self-defence courses the outcome may have been a lot different- 1 dead bad guy and I would still have my aunt.
