how do i remove factory paint from a gun?
I picked up a mossberg 500 recently. it has a woodland camo finish which i beleive is stock. can i remove it from the gun metal? what should i use? and finally does it have factory blueing underneath?
im not positive its a stock finish. its worn off in a couple spots and it appears to be blued underneath.
how can i tell if its a factory finish?
Some good answers here already.
About the only thing you CAN DO is simply paint over-top the finish.
I think that the Mossbergs are a good value for the money. HOWEVER, I also criticize them because the receivers are made of aluminum. And, the only way to “paint” aluminum so that it sticks is to use an anodized finish, which is what Mossberg does at their factory. Even that doesn’t last forever and depending on how much use the shotgun gets, the paint will start to flake off over time.
This is also why I shake my head in disbelief when I see people spending upwards of $1,000+ for Benellis and Berettas. Those guns, despite their premium prices, also use aluminum for a receiver material and I’ve actually seen Ducks Unlimited Commemorative guns that looked absolutely terrible after only 10 years of waterfowling use.
The good news for you is the the Mossberg is an “affordable” shotgun, so feel free to strip the gun down and use some automotive paints to achieve the desired colors.
