Which Bolwing Ball Should I Buy?
Im a beginning bowler looking to develop a hook, so I saved up to buy my own ball. The guy at the pro shop recommended either the Ebonite Tornado, or the Brunswick Slingshot. There both the same price, not really sure which one would be better. Also Im wondering if I should get the finger inserts and or the thumb slug for added grip. I use a fingertip grip, not really sure if that matters lol. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sadly there aren’t any other pro shops around where I live.
Your delivery and the conditions where you usually bowl should dictate which ball you choose. The guy at your pro shop may have seen you bowl and where you bowl and I haven’t. Normally I would tell you the fit of the ball is more important than the type of ball since you can’t score if you have to squeeze the ball just to hang on. A proper fit allows you to relax your arm swing and release the ball consistently when you want to. I also like the inserts and thumb slug for comfort and a consistent feel. Bowling balls are made differently and may be rough or smooth in the finger holes without the inserts.
The Tornado is a fairly hard ball, and probably won’t hook very much except on very dry lanes. You don’t have to have a big hook to score. The Slingshot is more middle of the road for hook, though more to the hooking side of the middle. Either ball could work, depending on the conditions and how you throw it. There is a pretty significant difference between the two choices you were given and I’m not sure that’s a good thing. If the pro knows your game and or conditions they would normally recommend two that are more alike. On a hook rating scale of 1 to 300, the Tornado is a 68 and the Slingshot is a 175. My guess is the only similarity is the price. Most beginning bowlers I know don’t crank the ball very much, so it doesn’t hurt to have a ball that can hook more than the Tornado. I have averaged over 220 with a ball that is 165 on the hook scale and I do not throw a big hook. There may be more choices closer to the Slingshot on the scale. This is also the best time to get a deal since winter bowling season is over and many pro shops are cleaning out their inventory before they cut back their summer hours. If you can, ask the pro to watch you throw a few shots before recommending the right ball for you.
