Can a water lily (hardy) stay open after it’s plucked?
I have arranged to have water lilies for my wedding (in a bowl of water for a centerpiece), but I didn’t realize the water lilies open and closes their blooms within a matter of hours. Do all types of water lilies do this? I have a hardy water lily as a sample, but it’s not ready to bloom open yet.
If I use the water lily with the root, I assume it will follow it’s natural course and close by late afternoon. But if I pluck it, will it stay open? How long before it wilts? Or is there any other way to make sure it stays open for one full day?
Or do any other types of water lilies remain open all the time? I don’t have access to a large portion, but I think I saw tropical at the place where I bought some.

You’ve made a nearly impossible task for yourself. No, they don’t stay open, and make extremely short-lived cut flowers. Having access to enough water lily flowers, that are ready to open THAT DAY would take royal amounts of money. And if it’s an evening reception, forget it.
But I like the bowl of water centerpiece idea. You just might want to either change the flower that you float. It doesn’t have to be a water lily just because it’s a floating flower. many other flowers will work, including mums, roses, daisies, and others. Or you might consider silk if you can find some water lilies in silk. Artificial flowers have really taken huge leaps in quality in the past few decades, and can look quite real until you touch them up close. And even then, they’re still pretty.
